Newsletter: Week of March 12th - March 16th

Grade 4 Newsletter
Weekly Update: March 12 - March 16, 2018

Language Arts

This week in reading, we will be using research skills to identify appropriate resources and use brain frames to structure notes. In writing, we will begin our Earth change information books with a focus on the organization of the book and using text features to support understanding.

Math

This week the students will be exploring line plots. They match the line plots to data and they will create their own line plot by using data they create. In addition, they will use the line plots to solve addition and subtraction problems.

Science/ Social Studies

Students are tying together what they have learned about What is the Earth made of and How do materials cycle through the Earth’s systems to answer What causes the Earth’s structure to continually change. They are beginning to research into their Earth change, using note-taking strategies and text structures to help them.

Resources
Grade 4 have noticed that digital responsibility is an area of which students need reminding and parents may want some resources too. We will post a series of resources to provoke discussions with your child. Linked below is a presentation that our counselors and tech team gave recently entitled Parenting in the Digital Age that could be great discussion points with your children about the decisions and responsibilities of using mobile/ smart phones/ internet at both home and school. http://bit.ly/ISKLPDA

Weekly Update: March 5 - March 9, 2018

Language Arts
This week in reading the children will be synthesizing the information
they have been reading on weathering and erosion and use brain frames
to collect new learning. In writing, the students will begin analyzing their
facts that they have researched and start writing the information in their
own words.

Math
This week the students will continue to explore line plots. They match
the line plots to data and they will create their own line plot by using data
they create. In addition, they will use the line plots to solve addition
and subtraction problems.

Science/ Social Studies
This week students will continue to research their Earth changes topic.
They are using their reading skills and note taking strategies to help them
learn more about how our Earth’s structure continually causes changes
and what the effects are.

Grade 4 Newsletter
Weekly Update: February 26 - March 2, 2018

Language Arts
This week in reading, we will continue to analyze text-structures in information texts and use brainframes to organize the information we are learning. In writing, the children will be reflecting on their writing from the Realistic Fiction writing unit and planning how to share their learning and progress with parents for the Student-Led Conferences on March 7 and 8.

Math
Students will continue to solve story problems involving adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators. They will also use their knowledge of equivalent fractions to convert their answers into lowest terms. They will begin using manipulative visualize how to convert improper fractions into mixed numbers.

Science/ Social Studies
Students will study erosion, deposition, and weathering by observing how water and wind can change the shape and structure of the Earth’s surface. Hands-on experiences will spark curiosity about how water and wind can impact sand, rocks, and mud. Students will then use reading strategies to understand more about how erosion, deposition, and weathering impact the Earth’s structure.

Weekly Newsletter - Week of February 12th - February 16th

Grade 4 Newsletter
Weekly Update: Feb. 12 - Feb. 16, 2018

Language Arts
This week, the students will continue with reading non-fiction texts related to the Earth Changes Unit. With these texts, students will be learning strategies to help them understand the text, such as sketching to visualize the main idea and note taking strategies for organizing information they are learning. In writing, the students will be writing the students will be assessed in their realistic fiction writing as they complete one final piece.

Math
Students will continue to explore the different combinations that can be used to make one whole. Students will practice decomposing into unit fractions and write as a sum of unit fractions. They will also be given the opportunity to show their understanding by creating area models and number lines to show how the combinations of fractions equal a whole.

Science/ Social Studies
Students will continue to explore the layers of the Earth and how tectonic plates have caused change, both slow and fast. We will be using our nonfiction reading strategies to answer our questions about tectonic plates and Pangaea.

Weekly Newsletter - Week of February 5th - 9th

Grade 4 Newsletter
Weekly Update: Feb. 5 - Feb. 9, 2018
Language Arts
This week we will begin our next non-fiction reading unit. This unit allows the students to explore texts connected to our Earth Changes Science unit, while building skills in information text reading. In writing, many children will be finishing their drafts and publishing their first realistic fiction story.

Math

The students will be reviewing the ‘Equivalent Fractions’ unit and will take the Unit Assessment. Our next unit will be ‘Operations with Fractions’. The students will begin learning how fractions be composed and decomposed, how can fractions of a given set be added and subtracted and how a fraction can be multiplied by a whole number.

Science/ Social Studies

The students will be exploring the Earth’s crust in depth. We will start to inquire into how do materials cycle through the Earth’s systems and what causes the Earth’s structure to continually change by looking at cause and effect relationships between the layers.

Newsletter - Weekly Update: Jan. 29 - Feb. 2, 2018

Language Arts
We are reaching the end of the realistic fiction reading unit and will be assessing the children on on their learning over the past 8 weeks. In writing, the children have been drafting their story scenes and next week will be in the process of revising to make their writing even stronger for the reader.

Math
This week the students will be recognizing and generating equivalent fractions. They will be given the opportunity to partition shapes in three different ways using an area model.

Science/ Social Studies
Students are learning what is the Earth made of by exploring the layers of the Earth. We will be connecting this knowledge of the Earth’s structure and how the Earth is continually changing.

Resources
When you ask your child, “How was school today?”, do they give you a one-word answer such as ,”good”?

Consider asking one of these questions to get your child talking about their school experiences and to discover their opinion about what they are learning, their teachers, and their friends:
Tell me about a moment today when you felt excited about what you were learning.
Tell me about a moment in class when you felt confused.
Were there any moments today when you felt worried? When you felt scared?
Were there times today when you felt that one of your classmates demonstrated care for you?
Were there any moments today when you felt proud of yourself?
What was challenging about your day?
What did you learn about yourself today?
What are you looking forward to tomorrow?

Newsletter - Week of January 22nd to January 26th

Newsletter
Weekly Update: Jan. 22 - Jan. 26, 2018

Language Arts
This week in reading, the students are developing theories about their main characters based on the patterns from the character’s words, actions and thoughts. In writing, the children are drafting their story scenes, focusing on storytelling using a strategy called Show, Don’t Tell.

Math
The students have started the Equivalent Fractions Unit and have been given the opportunity to model equivalent fractions in various forms. They will continue to show their understanding that fractions comparisons are only valid when the size of the ‘whole’ is the same.

Science/ Social Studies
Grade 4 has started an Earth Science unit. We will be investigating how the Earth’s structure is continually changing. Students will learn about Earth’s structure, particularly in relation to Earth’s layers, plate tectonics, the rock cycle, and weathering and erosion. We are tuning in this week by finding out geographical patterns in earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Resources
To tie in with our science unit on Earth Changes here is a Quizlet set that covers some of the vocabulary about Earth’s structure and layers.  Please encourage your child to go to the ‘learn’ and ‘flash cards’ section first. https://quizlet.com/_4b07ry

HAPPY LEARNING!
