Newsletter - Week of January 22nd to January 26th

Newsletter
Weekly Update: Jan. 22 - Jan. 26, 2018

Language Arts
This week in reading, the students are developing theories about their main characters based on the patterns from the character’s words, actions and thoughts. In writing, the children are drafting their story scenes, focusing on storytelling using a strategy called Show, Don’t Tell.

Math
The students have started the Equivalent Fractions Unit and have been given the opportunity to model equivalent fractions in various forms. They will continue to show their understanding that fractions comparisons are only valid when the size of the ‘whole’ is the same.

Science/ Social Studies
Grade 4 has started an Earth Science unit. We will be investigating how the Earth’s structure is continually changing. Students will learn about Earth’s structure, particularly in relation to Earth’s layers, plate tectonics, the rock cycle, and weathering and erosion. We are tuning in this week by finding out geographical patterns in earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Resources
To tie in with our science unit on Earth Changes here is a Quizlet set that covers some of the vocabulary about Earth’s structure and layers.  Please encourage your child to go to the ‘learn’ and ‘flash cards’ section first. https://quizlet.com/_4b07ry

HAPPY LEARNING!
