Newsletter - Weekly Update: Jan. 29 - Feb. 2, 2018

Language Arts
We are reaching the end of the realistic fiction reading unit and will be assessing the children on on their learning over the past 8 weeks. In writing, the children have been drafting their story scenes and next week will be in the process of revising to make their writing even stronger for the reader.

Math
This week the students will be recognizing and generating equivalent fractions. They will be given the opportunity to partition shapes in three different ways using an area model.

Science/ Social Studies
Students are learning what is the Earth made of by exploring the layers of the Earth. We will be connecting this knowledge of the Earth’s structure and how the Earth is continually changing.

Resources
When you ask your child, “How was school today?”, do they give you a one-word answer such as ,”good”?

Consider asking one of these questions to get your child talking about their school experiences and to discover their opinion about what they are learning, their teachers, and their friends:
Tell me about a moment today when you felt excited about what you were learning.
Tell me about a moment in class when you felt confused.
Were there any moments today when you felt worried? When you felt scared?
Were there times today when you felt that one of your classmates demonstrated care for you?
Were there any moments today when you felt proud of yourself?
What was challenging about your day?
What did you learn about yourself today?
What are you looking forward to tomorrow?

No School on Jan. 31st (Wednesday)
CNY and  CNY Cultural Day is on Friday, Feb. 23rd . The Lion Dance starts at 11AM in the gym.
